I remember when I was at school, I was probably about 14/15, there was a guy in my class that I fancied the pants off. Seriously, I was crushing on him for yeeears. So one day he was flirting with me, I was so over-the-top excited that he was even talking to me, never mind flirting. Then he said to me “You would be so pretty if your cheeks weren’t so big.” At that age I was probably a size 10/12 and 5ft 7, so not exactly chubby but OUCH. This stabbed me like a knife in the stomach. What gave him the right to say that? What a massive moose-knuckle.

This is something that we are seeing more and more these days. There are so many meme’s on Facebook and other social media, not just aimed at us ‘cuddly’ women, but at the slimmer woman as well. It’s like so many people’s backup insults are ‘well you’re/fat/ugly/skeletal anyway.’

There really is no excuse to treat each other like this. We are all critical enough of ourselves as it is without bitching on each other as well! Who says what you look like makes you beautiful? Surely, as that good old saying goes, beauty is on the inside.

But how are we supposed to believe and live that saying when body shaming is being shoved down our throats everywhere we look? In every magazine there are hundreds of articles showing us the latest celeb diet, or their new fitness DVD, urging us to buy the latest juice or supplement to ‘look slimmer instantly.’ As someone who spends so much of their life battling body insecurities how are we supposed to be content with how we look when we are constantly being told to change ourselves? Cheers for the confidence boost you glossy bellends.

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for healthy living but isn’t it just as important to be mentally healthy when it comes to your opinion of yourself?

We are all unique, quite beautifully so, we are given the bodies that we have at birth. We can’t change that. So why are we having this shame for our own beautiful bodies rammed down our throats?ย When did it become okay for other people to pass judgement on how we look?

And it isn’t just women, the craze of ‘dad bods’ is something that was circling recently. Why do we have to name it? Surely they are just normal, good looking guys, ageing (as we all do) and having more important things in their life than spending hours and hours a day at the gym?

Seriously, there is nothing uglier to me than someone who has to resort to an insult about someone’s appearance to gain a reaction. And that’s all the bitches do it for.

We spend so much time criticising ourselves, seeing all these products in the media to make our lips bigger or our waist smaller, why don’t we try and move some of that focus away and start celebrating what we DO love. Maybe you have a rocking hairstyle or have done something recently that you are proud of?

Let’s share some positivity guys, move away from all the haters and celebrate our talents, cos we sure as hell have a lot of them!
